Today is the day — my colonoscopy

Grateful for healthcare

I’m in the center with a big smile, wearing a light blue dress shirt and a dark blue checkered jacket.

Being a nonprofit fundraising consultant I often write about nonprofits, donor relationship building, and fundraising. I also write about self care and the need for nonprofit fundraising professionals to take care of themsleves and avoid burnout, physical and mental exhaustion.

It’s important that leadership, whether in the nonprofit world or the business world, lead by example. Sharing stories of self-care, taking vacation, leaving the office early, and taking care of our health is important.

At 56 this is my second colonoscopy. My first one showed two polyps which the doctor took care of during the procedure. Because of that it was recommended I do another one in five years, as opposed to the regular ten year check.

The whole prep time is not fun. I won’t go into details, but you’re cleansing for the procedure. The biggest part for me is not being able to eat for over 24 hours. I love eating.

And yet while drinking the cleansing drink and not eating, the main thing I think of is how grateful I am to have healthcare. As an owner of a consulting business, I’m even more grateful that I can be on my husband’s policy and not have to pay for a single person/small business policy.

I believe it’s suggested to get a colonoscopy at age 50. Check with your doctor. We can’t take our health for granted.
