Some Thoughts for Podcasters

Hundreds of hours of listening to podcasts has me thinking about what I wish podcasters would consider.

I have been listening to podcasts for several years. Some have become important to me, part of my weekly learning.

Last year I did a road trip from Los Angeles to San Antonio for a work conference. That gave me plenty of time to listen to even more podcasts.

Since the road trip I have thought about what I’m not so fond of with them. I’m sharing this list as a kind gesture to those who do podcasts, meant to be loving feedback from a fan.

First, advertisements. I get it, you make money from them. They are challenging for me, especially if you begin your podcast with them. It’s worse if you have two in a row. My request would be to place them somewhere in the middle of the podcast.

Next, please stop interrupting your guests. Many podcasts I listen to because of your guest. They are the expert, or at least the person I want to hear from. Let them talk.

Give me an option to pay you. There are some podcasts I finish and I want to support them, but didn’t hear how to do so. Let your listeners know how they can support, and where they need to go to do that (ex: your website).

Lastly, remember that as much of a draw you are, your guest could be an equal draw. Be prepared for the interview. Your listeners are counting on you to ask amazing, well-thought-out questions. You can even do like some do by asking your listeners and colleaugues to share questions for an upcoming guest.

Thank you for doing what you do!

Take a risk. Be of service. Support your friends and colleagues. Be kind.
