I’m in Colorado for work and play, and feel like I can’t not write about Rocky Mountain National Park while here.

Located just northwest of Denver, this national park is a must visit for hikers and lovers of the backcountry. Although there are dozens of backcountry trails, day-hike trails, car camping areas and gorgeous drives, I want to tell you about a specific backcountry hike we took that was one of our all-time favorites: Sandbeach Lake Trail.

Located in the southeast part of Rocky Mountain National Park, this trail provides all you would ever want in a backcountry adventure. This is not an easy hike, at least it wasn’t for me. It’s mostly uphill, and the uphill begins right away! It’s about four miles to the spot where you will camp. If you find it difficult like I did, just take your time, hike slowly, and rest when needed. I guarantee you that you will be super happy that you made the hike once you arrive the shore of the beach with the mindblowing views.

There are several backcountry campsites there, you need to make a reservation for one of them ahead of time. All of them have beautiful views of the lake and mountains, and campaing there is an incredible experience. We have done backcountry all over the west and this is one of our favorites. It checks all of the boxes for us.

It’s also lightly traveled.

Parking is easy at the lot at the trailhead. We had no issues.
