It’s been years since I was laid off from my fundraising position at a nonprofit, and some days it feels much more recent than that.

I have clear memories of loading my office items into my truck, and of the drive home.

I had had an idea that I may be laid off soon, so I have begun planning. In fact, I was all set to apply for unemployment the moment I returned to my office after being let go.

So many things going through my head on that drive home. Fortunately, because my husband was working and we carried no debt, I at least knew we were OK financially for some time.

It also helped that I had a little severance and vacation days that was paid out to me in my final check.

The main thing I like to talk about when being asked about what to do after being laid off if community. The first thing I did once I got home was post on my socials that I had been laid off. And I called those in my inner circle to let them know personally.
