Fundraising Tip: “I Don’t Know.”

One of the most important things I can say.

For someone whose work is in consulting, who is hired to support nonprofits in their relationship building, fundraising, and recruiting efforts, one would think saying “I don’t know” may not be the best thing to say to a client.

For those in the nonprofit fundraising arena, you may feel the same thing.

I think it’s a powerful statement.

People respect it.

Donors respect it.

And my clients respect it.

I got comfortable with this when I began my first development director position. There was a lot I didn’t know.

And I was very comfortable saying that. I was new to fundraising, and I was new to fundraising for programs that changed and saved lives.

“What does our gift do for this program?”

“Hmm, I want to make sure I give you the most correct information on this so let me connect with our program teams and I’ll get back with you ASAP.”

This whole interaction grew our relationship, one that continues to support the nonprofit to this day.
