What is it and why it’s important.

April 24th is Denim Day.

It’s been happening since 1999.

Denim Day was created by a nonprofit called Peace Over Violence in Los Angeles after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the 18- year old victim was wearing tight jeans she implied consent.

The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.

Denim Day is the last Wednesday of April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It’s become a day of action and awareness in which people are encouraged to wear denim to combat victim blaming and educate others about sexual violence.

And to support justice for survivors.

I work with a nonprofit called Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice, another Losa Angeles-based nonprofit, one that serves survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and trafficking with free legal aid including attorneys in court.

Each year we promote Denim Day as part of Sexual Assault Awareness activities. And each year I see statistics that overwhelm me.

I won’t share those here, but if you’re interested, a simple google search with bring you more…
